Donna as a phone ghost, out of necessity, worked well, almost like it was an intentional way of raising questions of identity. Her death must have been a horror for you. The film offers great archive material and good interviewees (the sister was fantastic, as were all the others). It is very carefully researched, tightly narrated, intelligent and neatly edited – it’s a joy. It’s a continually surprising journey, both in its content and form, through the seventies and eighties. The use of the photos is brilliant. They become like exhibits about pop history, and when you introduce other material, we accept the poor technical quality as texture. It’s great how respectful you were, for example in how you introduced all the musicians involved in the single cover. It would be great if this were the start of an ongoing collaboration between you and Arte on more films about music and culture and you could make a lot more strong films like this, which are far better in terms of quality than the other documentaries made here about pop. It devours people, skin and all. The documentary Donna Summer – Hot Stuff opens with scenes from a chat show in the 1980s. The host asks what the singer thinks of the cliches about her. ‘Disco diva?’ She just giggles: ‘Tss’. ‘Queen of sex?’ She sighs: ‘Urgh.’ Donna Summer rose to fame in the mid 1970s with her hits ‘Love To Love You Baby’ and ‘I Feel Love’, which feature her softly sung verses and sensual vocalizing over producer Giorgio Moroder’s futuristic Moog synthesizer beats. Fame followed her for the rest of her life. One critic from Time magazine reckoned that Summer simulated 22 orgasms on ‘Love To Love You’, while the record cover showed her in a nightdress. “I felt like a product,” said Summer later. “Like a bottle that someone had stuck a label on.” She did of course contribute to the product. One night, when the line ‘I love to love you’ came to her, she called Moroder. Directors Lucia Palacios and Dietmar Post conducted research for their fascinating film on both sides of the Atlantic. They spoke to the singer’s sister and brother and others who knew her well, like her former partner Peter Mühldorfer and the producer Harold Faltermeyer. Donna Summer’s voice appears frequently like a ghost, recorded during a phone call in November 2011. She says she is ‘good, great’. The interview arranged for the following summer never took place. In May 2012, at the age of 63, the singer died of lung cancer. Donna Summer’s career develops into a struggle for emancipation and control. She moves to LA to advance her success in America. Her album ‘Bad Girls’ is number one in the charts and in total she will sell over 130 million records. But according to Moroder, her label Casablanca Records is a ‘madhouse, piles of drugs, everyone was high at eleven in the morning’. Summer moves to the company newly founded by music mogul David Geffen, but she is soon dropped. ‘She Works Hard For The Money’ is another defiant hit for her. She later lives in Nashville and becomes a committed born-again Christian. Donna Summer deserves a place of honour in pop history’s hall of fame. The DJ and writer Hans Nieswandt rates ‘I Feel Love’ alongside ‘Autobahn’ by Kraftwerk as ‘the most modern song of the seventies’.

Here you can read the original German article Der Tagesspiegel

In Spain you can watch the film here FILMIN
In the rest of the world here play loud! archive & store

play loud! productionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01704760732042925724noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4747552977528607225.post-87400010418662342532021-06-21T02:30:00.015-07:002021-06-21T03:09:33.414-07:00In a Village Named After Franco, Spain Is Struggling to Overcome the Fascist Past

An interview with Lucía Palacios and Dietmar Post (by Alex Alvarez Taylor for Jacobin)

One of the three hundred settlements founded by Franco's regime, the village of Llanos del Caudillo is still today named in homage to the dictator. Villagers' nostalgia for his regime reflects Spain's failure to reckon with its past — and the ongoing struggle to gain recognition for fascism's victims.

The village of Llanos del Caudillo, in Spain’s Castilla La Mancha region, is one of three hundred “colonies,” or settlements, christened by the Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in the decades after the Civil War. Its historic link to his regime is still today visible in its name: Llanos — “plains” — del Caudillo — “of the leader.”

Established in the 1950s by the agriculture ministry’s National Colonization Institute, the settlements reflected the Franco regime’s disastrous policy of economic “self-sufficiency,” beginning with the drive to repopulate or “recolonize” devastated rural areas in the aftermath of the war. This further served the regime’s ideological mission to create a new, predominantly rural society from both fascist and traditionalist elements. Drawing on Italian fascist Benito Mussolini, whose regime embarked on a città nuove (new cities) initiative, the Institute promised:

To “give” peasants a plot of land. To forge a New Man. To build a Fascist, anti-urban, anti-proletarian Man – tied to the soil and loyal to the regime. The new man is the debtor of assets controlled by the party: home, land, and work.

The settlers would, in theory, receive the property rights to their plot and home after working the land for a certain number of years. Nevertheless, at least in the case of Llanos del Caudillo, all documentation relating to the colonies seemingly vanished in the democratic transition of 1978. Despite this, today most of its residents insist on honoring the dictator who “gave” them their town and livelihoods. It thus finds itself at odds with Spain’s 2007 Historical Memory Law, which recommends the removal of Francoist symbols from public places.

The year following the passage of that law, the village was visited by filmmakers Lucía Palacios and Dietmar Post, resulting in the brilliant 2013 documentary Los colonos del caudillo (Franco’s Settlers). The film was soon met with censorship attempts, including a threatening letter by the son of one of the interviewees, seeking to prevent its screening at the International Film Festival in Valladolid (Spain’s second-largest). Also the directors of 2018’s La Causa contra Franco, the pair spoke to Alex Alvarez Taylor about the village, their work, and Spain’s struggle to overcome the legacy of a four-decade dictatorship.

AAT
Of the three hundred settlements built under the Franco regime, eleven still maintain their original names, contravening the historical memory law. Do the residents of Llanos del Caudillo know that they are in the minority — going against the grain?

LP/ DP
Of the eleven towns that were asked by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces to remove direct references to the dictatorship, two did change their names in accordance with the law, as far as we know, and two more are about to complete the process.
As for the rest, some remain silent while others simply refuse to apply the law. Among the latter is Llanos del Caudillo. As can be seen in the film, in 2004 a referendum was held — and 87 percent voted to maintain the association with Franco.
To this day, the village is still determined to keep the name. Though the residents of Llanos know they are going against the grain, we don’t think they’re particularly bothered.
As to whether they know they are in the minority, we couldn’t say. It all depends on the perspective you take. We can imagine that, from their point of view, not only are they right but they can also count on important support from sectors of the Spanish media, as well as from numerous followers on social networks.

AAT
I think that your focus on the crimes of the postwar period helps to counter the popular, relativistic view that “both sides committed atrocities during the war.” In fact, the victors never stopped their so-called crusade against their enemies, whether perceived or real. The murderous intention and the systematic character of the Francoite rebels’ assault on the Spanish Republic led historian Paul Preston to talk of a Spanish holocaust. Did this loaded word ever come up in any of your conversations?

LP/ DP
During the filming of La causa contra Franco, we spoke to historian Francisco Espinosa about whether the word holocaust can be applied to the Spanish case. That it fails to appear either in the film or off-record has to do with us being faithful to the definition given in the Argentinean lawsuit, which does not speak of a holocaust but of genocide and crimes against humanity.
The word holocaust has two meanings: one, the mass slaughter of human beings, and two, the systematic extermination of Jews and other groups by the Nazi regime. If we take the first, we can indeed speak of a Spanish holocaust. In the Spanish case, the leaders of the Francoite coup often spoken in terms of “cleansing,” i.e. a political cleansing.
When discussing the regime’s crimes during the filming of Franco’s Settlers, a response we often received was: I don’t care what evil Franco did in other places, here he helped us and, therefore, we are grateful to him.

AAT
Franco is often regarded as a successful industrializer, but his failed agricultural policy is rarely mentioned. Did you ever discuss the famous “years of hunger” with residents?

LP/ DP
Of course, it was hard not to. The settler families who arrived in Llanos as of 1955 barely had anything; they had suffered the extreme shortages of the “turnaround decade” of the forties. Once in Llanos, and after years of unimaginable toil, many began to see an improvement. However, this did not happen thanks to any specific policy from Franco. General improvements in the economy were largely responsible.
Let’s not forget that from 1957 onwards, the so-called technocrats from Opus Dei took the reins of Franco’s government. They were behind the “Development Plans” that ditched the autarkic ambitions of the postwar period. We should also consider the way in which rural Spain was deeply affected by mass emigration in the 1960s, from the countryside to industrial areas (Madrid, Levante, Catalonia, and the Basque Country) or abroad (Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany). The historian Isidro Sánchez explains this very well in the film and provides a good deal of information regarding its tremendous “social cost.”
Simultaneously, anti-Franco forces and the Comisiones Obreras union were gaining ground, such that their wage demands could no longer be ignored. Following the development-plan reforms, the Falange had increasingly less influence and ever fewer positions of power within the government. However, the Ministry of Agriculture, upon which the National Colonization Institute depended, remained in the hands of the Falange right up until the end of Franco’s regime.
One interviewee said that living in the colony was like working in a “concentration camp.” Settlers were subject to arbitrary commands, constant inspections, imposed targets, summary dismissal for minor infractions, unpaid overtime, and given the least fertile patches while they had to seed the more fertile patches that the Institute’s “supervisors” kept for themselves.

AAT
The truth is that the settlers were cheated and exploited. Why do you think so many kept quiet about this?

LP/ DP
They kept quiet out of fear, ignorance, because they’d actually supported the regime, or because they were grateful to have a roof over their heads and some land to farm. The most critical were the few who had slipped into the village despite having had parents who had fought for democracy. They were the restless ones — the ones who wanted to change things.

AAT
Both documentaries are full of telling political and economic details that are usually either forgotten or treated as mere statistics. For example, you make clear that industrialization was only possible thanks to the cheapness of labor power in Spain. Strikes, civil unrest, and waves of state repression in response to industrial action were a constant fixture of the regime. How important was it for you to be able to portray the human and social cost of modernization?

LP/ DP
Throughout history, change towards a better and fairer world has always had its origin in social movements. During the Franco regime, change was achieved by the efforts mainly of workers, some intellectuals, and even parts of the Catholic Church, all of whom saw their freedom and even lives endangered.
Some still believe that Franco “gave” them democracy as a gift by naming [future king] Juan Carlos as his successor. Nothing could be further from the truth. Franco named him his successor because he was convinced that the king would continue his work.

AAT
What did the teachers you interview feel about their student’s views on Franco’s legacy? One of them said that the problem lies with the families, beyond the classroom. Do you think that your films can help to educate people outside of the classroom?

LP/ DP
Books, plays, films, and art in general can help us understand the world better. We believe that documentaries can raise awareness, although unfortunately many of the documentaries produced today are closer to Manichean political pamphlets in which there is only black and white, good and evil. They don’t show the world as it really is, that is, complex, full of contradictions, and with many shades of gray. In our documentaries we try to cover that range of grays.

AAT
To join a colony, workers needed to provide a certificate of good moral conduct. Did you ever see an example of one? What would a failed certificate read?

LP/ DP
The “certificates of good conduct” were issued by respective mayors, the Falange, the priest . . . the authorities. If a person’s certificate read along the lines of: “Son of a republican (not affiliated to the regime),” they would have significant issues not only finding work, but also in obtaining settler status and its corresponding plot of land. Despite this, some republicans did manage to do so. Someone must have given them a certificate “of good conduct.”
In the archives of the Manzanares town hall (which Llanos reported to), we came across a favorable certificate issued to a settler by the then-mayor of his hometown. The settler had been an old-timer, or camisa vieja, i.e. a Falangist militant even before the war.

AAT
One lady said that many of the problems we have in Spain today are attributable to the enthusiasm with which many women embraced the Sección Femenina — the “female branch” of the Falange party. What do you think she meant by this?

LP/ DP
To get an idea of how the regime calculated an individual’s worth, we only need look at how they classified the settlers. A male settler was worth one point, a female settler was worth half, and the son or daughter’s worth was calculated in line with their age. They were “producers” (the regime’s term for them).
A woman was worth half as much as a man because she “produced” less. Machismo was and is part of fascist ideology. The teacher you are referring to relates this past to the macho violence that unfortunately still goes on today.

AAT
In Franco on Trial, you document the development of the so-called “Argentine Lawsuit,” which aims to bring the principle of universal jurisdiction to bear on the Franco regime’s crimes. You spoke to María Eugenia, daughter of the notorious general Yagüe. She had no problem with her father’s silence — with the omertà, as it were — that he maintained regarding his actions during the civil war. As filmmakers familiar with postwar West Germany, did her acceptance of such silence remind you of an older generation in that country?

LP/ DP
The German and Spanish cases are very different. Franco died tucked up in bed and there never really was a break with the regime. In Germany, the Nuremberg, Auschwitz, Majdanek, and other trials took place. In some cases, the children of former Nazi leaders completely broke things off with their parents. In Spain, there are few such cases because no national debate was held, nor was there any official condemnation of fascism in parliament.
Having said that, not all of the post-Nazi generation distanced themselves from their parents or grandparents. As such, German historical memory is far from having achieved its goal. A recent survey reported that 36 percent of Germans believe that their grandparents were victims of Nazism rather than its perpetrators. These are very worrying figures. For this reason, some critics are talking of the failure of the Vergangenheitsbewältigung [“struggle to work through the past”].

AAT
The Argentine judge María Servini thinks that there is hope that one day the regime’s torturers will be brought to trial because the wounds of Spanish society haven’t healed. She sees unresolved pain as a sign of hope. Did you feel more optimistic about Spain’s prospects after shooting the two documentaries?

LP/ DP
That’s a tough call. When we began our research for Franco’s Settlers in 1999, the theme of historical memory was not on many people’s lips. You did have a rather harsh discourse from the conservative Partido Popular under José María Aznar, a rather civil war–like rhetoric. Only in 2000, after the first DNA-based exhumation in Priaranza del Bierzo, did a new phase begin. A civil movement emerged that turned the theme around.
Since then, a lot has changed. Increasingly, Spanish citizens no longer believe the official Francoite ideology of two warring factions. Rather, they realize that there was only one “side” (made up of monarchists, the military, fascists, and the Catholic Church) — one that had attacked a legitimate and democratic government. There is a vast gap separating today from the day when Franco’s crimes will be tried in court. Dietmar is optimistic that this will happen one day, Lucía is not.

AAT
I noticed that you were able to elicit responses by showing your subjects old photographs of the colony in its early days. But when interviewees brought their own artifacts before the camera, such as when General Yagüe’s daughter showed us items that belonged to her father, you made sure that they explained the story behind them. What role do everyday items play in your documentary work, and how important is it to let people speak for themselves?

LP/ DP
Much of today’s documentary filmmaking seeks sensation, emotion, and even outrage or indignation. Our work differs radically, for one because we don’t go to people’s homes with a preconceived idea and/or a written script of what we want them to tell us.
This is not to say that we haven’t investigated beforehand. On the contrary, much of our documentary work is focused on the research phase. For La Causa contra Franco, we prepared files on each defendant in the Argentine lawsuit. In the case of General Yagüe, we prepared a file detailing the crimes he had committed. We’re motivated out of curiosity for the things people tell us.
The photos, letters, and documents function as springboards for recollection, activating a kind of “tactile memory” or simply to make associations. Mrs Yagüe is very proud of all the documents and paraphernalia she has of her father. When we arrived at her house, we didn’t know what awaited us. She voluntarily brought everything out and let us film. Nothing is staged. At any given moment, both she and the audience know that no tricks or deceptions are going on.
This “open” way of documentary-making is under threat because more and more of them are either scripted and/or based on deception. Instead of taking the person they are filming seriously, they exploit them and use them for instrumental ends, be they commercial or political.

AAT
To this day, thousands of Franco’s victims remain in mass graves. What was it like to film an exhumation?

LP/ DP
The exhumations by the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory are always open to the public, if such a term can be used. One of their main objectives is for everyone to see how they work. In addition, there you can consult the lists of people believed to be buried on site. For me (Lucía), most impressive was witnessing how relatives consulted such lists and found the name of their grandfather, uncle, father. . .
To film an exhumation, you need the permission of the Association, which sets certain limits to prevent the camera from intimidating the relatives. It is an understandable measure that must be respected because, as filmmakers, we should not interfere in such a private matter, so full of emotion and pain.
The same goes for mourning. We recommend everyone to go and see an exhumation. You see just how respectfully and with what care the forensic experts and volunteers, many very young and from many different countries, work.

AAT
What was the reception like when you toured the films in Spain? Were there any unforeseeable responses?

LP/ DP
We organize a project of “itinerant cinema” inspired by the “educational missions” of the Second Republic. The aim is to bring film to places where there are no longer cinemas — to villages and neighborhood associations, for example.
Commercial documentary film, with its quasi-neoliberal belief in “genius” and individual artistry, has lost touch with the public. Our demand is for a cooperative cinema that frees documentaries from the market and turns them into a “common good.” For this reason, within the German documentary filmmakers’ union AgDok, a small group is working on an ambitious project titled “Docs for Democracy.”
As for the tours, every single one of the screenings was exceptional. However, two stand out: the presentation in Llanos del Caudillo in front of two-thirds of the residents and the official premiere at the Seminci festival in Valladolid, which almost didn’t take place due to a prior censorship attempt.

About the Interviewer
Alex Alvarez Taylor is currently preparing a doctoral project on Marxism and allegory. He lives and works in Spain.

Con "She Works Hard For The Money" consiguió otro gran éxito.

Franco-Diktatur lernen will, sollte sich unbedingt diesen Dokumentarfilm
anschauen.

Don't Knock the Rock Festival's sneak-preview screening of "Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback,"
Dietmar Post and Lucia Palacios' documentary about one of the most intriguing prophetic cult bands of
the '60s.

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">Eight years in the making, the film follows the musical transformation of five American GIs who met
when they were stationed in Gelnhausen, Germany, during the Cold War. After apprenticing as the
Torquays in the same rough "beat clubs" in which the Beatles were schooled, these strangers in a
strange land acquired a pair of managers, the image-savvy advertising men Karl Remy and Walther
Niemann, who re-conceptualized the group as the Monks.

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">As bassist Eddie Shaw says with precision in the film, the Monks were "an art band working at a
grass-roots level." Clad in black, wearing rope neckties, their hair close-cropped and tonsured, the five
musicians ground out an unprecedented style mating yelping vocals, primitive beats, percussive
electric banjo, screaming keyboards and high-volume guitar work featuring forward-looking feedback,
distortion and wah-wah effects. The band's lone album "Black Monk Time," released by German
Polydor in 1966, was a dizzy, wondrous combo of Teutonic austerity and American exuberance. But it
flopped, and the group fell apart in 1967.

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">The Monks were wrested from obscurity three decades later, thanks to the ardent embrace of garage-
rock fans, the well-received release of Shaw's self-published 1994 memoir (also titled "Black Monk
Time") and the first American issue of the album in 1997 on Rick Rubin and Henry Rollins' label
Infinite Zero. In the late '90s, the band's credo "Monk Time" was featured in a national TV ad for the
sports drink Powerade. "The Transatlantic Feedback" climaxes with footage of the band's debut U.S.
gig at New York's Cavestomp Festival in 1999.

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">Co-director Post's fascination with the Monks long predated America's interest in the band. He recalls
that in Germany's early punk era, the group's album was played at parties alongside the Clash and
Wire. "I knew from the first time I heard the Monks in 1981, this is something different," he says. "To
me, it made total sense."

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">Like Shaw -- who attended the REDCAT screening with banjoist Dave Day -- Post dismisses any notion
that the Monks were a garage band. "Bullshit," he says, instead relating the band's development to
such artistic movements as Bauhaus and Fluxus, which clearly had an impact on managers Remy and
Niemann.

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">"The five Americans were able to fill the concept with their own ideas and background and music,"
Post adds. "They swung."

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">Palacios continues that the bandmates "had nothing in common. ... If they were not in the Army, they
would never have been together."

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">After the REDCAT screening, Shaw told his audience that the diverse tastes of the band members --
swing and modern jazz, country and '50s rock 'n' roll -- and an accommodation bred by Army life
forged the Monks' bizarre sound.

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">"The Monks are five different guys from five different genres of music," Shaw said. "We had to adapt
to each other. We all had to compromise. ... (But) being in the Army creates strange bedfellows. We
were already used to working out of our own realm."

<span style="font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 9.000000pt;">Post and Palacios are seeking international distribution for their penetrating, loving documentary. In
the meantime, their production company Play Loud! is readying a tribute album, "Silver Monk Time."
And -- hold on to your cowls -- the Monks are contemplating a late-2006 tour.

E. W.: Wie habt Ihr darauf reagiert?

Post: In zweierlei Hinsicht.

Gesucht werden v.a.

Wichtiger erscheint mir etwas ganz Anderes.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">The political documentary film: powered by emotion?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">a text by Eleni Ampelakiotou
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">(The original text was published in the German magazine TV Diskurs, Heft 88, 2019)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">“Feelings make facts” stated Nikolaus Blome, political editor of Germany’s largest tabloid Bild while outlining the approach for the pilot run of the weekly magazine Bild Politics, whose section headings Anger, Joy and Curiosity are a departure from the classic categories of domestic and foreign policy. Although it purports to be about facts and relevant subjects, it’s actually much more “about the underlying emotions”. 1) What this reveals is that it’s no longer considered questionable to emotionalise complex political subjects and simplify issues like in the old weeklies, which used emotions as demagogues for ideological purposes. The emotionalisation of political subjects is related to the ratings-winning genre of ‘Affektfernsehen’ (TV that aims to arouse an emotional response). From confrontational talk shows, to reality TV and ‘infotainment’, it harnesses the potential to stir up and outrage the audience, also deployed by the manipulative strategies of populist movements, social media generated shitstorms or hashtags like #MeToo. The year-long editorial dispute between WDR (Germany’s largest public broadcasting institution) and arte (Franco-German TV network) over the film FRANCO ON TRIAL: THE SPANISH NUREMBERG by Grimme prizewinning directors and producers Dietmar Post and Lucia Palacios could be seen (according to Post) as illustrative of the editorial obstacles faced by a classic political documentary film that doesn’t use the emotionalising approach. Based on impressively thorough research and the aim to present the perspectives of victims as well as perpetrators, FRANCO ON TRIAL documents the historical and legal background to efforts by the Argentinian judiciary to prosecute living alleged perpetrators of crimes against humanity under Franco’s dictatorship, following the failure of the attempt to bring the case to trial in a Spanish court in 2008. WDR even reproached the directors for the film’s objectivity and purism, free from any sentimental bias towards the victims. In a discussion, filmmaker Dietmar Post explained the dispute: “The documentary film FRANCO ON TRIAL, co-produced by arte and WDR, broadcast on 13.2.2018 on arte and soon after on Phoenix, had been given the green light by arte editors at WDR in 2017. Surprisingly, the editorial team at WDR (the budgetary minority co-partner), declared the film ‘unbroadcastable’ due to its style, because it wasn’t “emotionalising” enough and seemed too much of an “auteur film”. (...) So completion of the film was delayed by a whole year. (...) Although we’d made it clear we would be willing to discuss a shorter version, WDR withheld the last installment of funding for the production. A bank guarantee was also blocked.” 2) The filmmakers, who had won the Grimme prize in 2008 and received a nomination in 2016, are scarcely newcomers to documentary; their body of work exemplifies the classic political documentary film, in its aesthetics, content and form, its credibility based on in-depth research and its presentation of complex political and historical contexts, objective, sober distance from all its protagonists and refusal to use emotionalising, tension-creating dramaturgy and treatment of both protagonists and viewers as autonomous counterparts. “Aesthetically we wanted (...) to reveal our working approach at every point: conversational situations that give everyone the same opportunities (...) no distractions. Keeping the conversational situation as natural as possible (...). The plaintiffs must be allowed to speak, so too must the alleged perpetrators. (...) We should be guided by what we’re told and by the archive material, rather than a preformed opinion. (...) So the viewer can form their own impression. Testimonies stand against testimonies.” 3)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">WDR’s editors were well aware of the filmmakers’ documentary approach. Furthermore, they had a detailed 40 page account of the filmmaking process: “In 2008, when the Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón first tried to bring the case to court, we contacted him, hoping to follow the trial. Then in 2010, when Garzón was politically sidelined by a 11 year ban from professional practice, the cause was picked up by human rights lawyers, who organised the first legal action in Argentina (Darío Rivas, the first plaintiff appears in our film). From the outset we were interested in the historical and legal aspects. (...) Who are the alleged perpetrators? What’s the political context? Who are the victims? Why are they victims? What crimes were committed? What historical and forensic evidence exists? What orders were there? From the outset we sought to focus on the historical, legal and (since the introduction of DNA analysis) forensic aspects, rather than the emotions. (...) It was also important to us to give an accurate description of paradigmatic cases in the separate phases of the terror, which are very important for the prosecution: the coup, war, postwar repression, exile, concentration camp, torture, general repression during the long dictatorship, the late stage of Francoism and the transitional phase after Franco’s death (...) Our approach was very methodical, because we had read the bill of indictment first. (...) So a political and historical approach from the outset.” The rejection by WDR forced the producers to find new ways: “Until that point it had always been possible to reach an agreement with the broadcasters. Contracts between broadcasters and producers aim to find an agreement. So we said “ok, if WDR doesn’t want it we’ll contact other broadcasters”. Phoenix was interested at once. (..) After a dispute lasting over a year, WDR backpedalled, paid the last installment of funding and the bank guarantee was authorised.” 4)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">At almost the same time as FRANCO ON TRIAL was broadcast on arte, a film about the same subject, but meeting the demand for emotionalisation, was premiered as part of the Panorama Programme of the Berlinale 2018: THE SILENCE OF OTHERS, by Emmy winning directors Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar, with Pedro Almodovár as executive producer. Taking as its narrative anchor ‘Mirador de la Memoria’, the monumental sculptures in Valle del Jerte by artist Francisco Cedenilla for the victims of the civil war and Franco’s dictatorship, using an emotive aesthetic and shot with dazzling backlight, THE SILENCE OF OTHERS opens with a shot of María Martín laying a bunch of flowers at the edge of a motorway built on top of a mass grave where the body of her mother, murdered by Francoists, is buried. “How unjust life is. Not life. We humans, we are unjust” says María Martín and her statement is accompanied by a shot of a snow-white baby goat, grazing on the edge of the road, turning it into a generalised sentimental statement about the injustice of humanity. Similarly, footage of animals and children repeatedly accompanies the narration. The bunch of flowers withers by the roadside like María Martín’s hopes of exhuming her mother. Anonymous hands touch the sculptures as melancholy music plays. The tone of pathos and sentimentality established by the opening continues in the use of the ‘royal we’ by the off-camera commentary, which becomes a generalising ‘we’ standing for a generation whose parents apparently never spoke about Franco’s dictatorship, leaving the subsequent generations with a sense of ignorance. The supposed amnesia of a whole generation, seemingly unable to draw on any sources of information other than their parents, is represented in the didactic, infantilising tone as it fades into a photo and explains to the viewer that Franco is the person beside Hitler, but neglects to explain the concrete political and historical consequences of their ‘acquaintance’. Even though the film tries to understand the processes and impediments in the Argentinian legal action, it largely ignores the political convictions of the victims, whose political opposition was the reason for their persecution and murder, except in the case of the members of the student movement who were victims of torture at the end of the 1960s. The victims are presented primarily as fathers, mothers, daughters and sons, detached from the political identity which had made them targets under Franco. The victims’ emotional dramas are strung together like cuttings of protagonists, edited together for emotive effect, until one of the protagonists feels the need to close her eyes in front of the camera. The Argentinian human rights lawyer Ana Messuti isn’t so much questioned about the legal issues, as used as a consoling authority. The interjection by judge María Servini de Cubría from the First Chamber of the Federal Criminal Court in Buenos Aires that one must remain objective despite victims’ emotionally affecting accounts of torture and the murder of their relatives, was unfortunately ignored by the directors. With its manipulative imagery and emotional bias towards the victims the film neglects such objectivity. The perpetrators are demonised as moral antagonists and not portrayed in their political role as part of the institutionalised repression led by the regime. There was criticism of the film’s false portrayal of the start of the Argentinian legal action and the inaccurate information regarding the financing of the exhumations. The great granddaughter of one victim, Aitana Vargas, felt compelled to write a letter to the New Yorker highlighting the film’s misrepresentation of an exhumation: “As much as I appreciate the work of the directors of ‘The Silence of Others’, the documentary film does not present a realistic portrait of my grandmother’s story (Ascensión Mendieta (author’s annotation)). The body she is looking at in the documentary footage is not that of her father (Timoteo Mendieta (author’s annotation)). It was someone else’s body. Many people in Spain and outside my country know that because many Spanish and international media sources have reported on it. My family had to go through another round of exhumations to find my great grandfather, who was localised, identified and given a dignified, non-religious burial in Madrid some months later in 2017.” 5) Questioned by journalist Willy Veleta about manipulation of the facts, the directors replied: “It’s not a film about facts, but about feelings and Ascensión’s view that the skull was that of her father, provides the perfect ending. Her family seemed to agree." 6)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Despite the inadequate portrayal of the legal context of the Argentinian prosecution, the politically significant circumstances of the failure of the first legal action in Spain, the leveling of specific differences between political dictatorships in Chile, Cambodia and Rwanda, and the manipulation of known facts for the sake of narrative ‘coherence’, THE SILENCE OF OTHERS was highly praised at both festivals and in the print media. A parallel can be seen here with the high profile case of Claas Relotius, a journalist who achieved success and won prizes for his emotionalising articles, but was found to have “falsified his articles on a grand scale.”7) This scandal revealing the emotionalisation of stories in the media has been seen as a moment of crisis for German journalism.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">In an article about the Berlinale screening of THE SILENCE OF OTHERS Janosch Angene writes: “It’s an emotional rollercoaster from sorrow about the past, to hope, joy and emotions at the successes that are slowly but surely taking shape. A tremendously emotional, profound and important documentary film, which convincingly demonstrates the importance of the reappraisal of injustices in the history of Spain and the whole world. In the last four years of the Berlinale, this afternoon was the first time I’ve seen a whole auditorium with tears in their eyes give the directors a standing ovation.” 8) Complex political and historical issues are simplified to a generalised ‘injustice’, suspended in a tear-jerking happy end, with the unifying ‘we’ evoking a consoling world experience. Aiming for emotional impact in the guise of politics, this documentary style does not address the viewer as a political entity, but as Thomas Assheuer writes in Zeit Online with reference to the Relotius case, “as one needing existential consolation. (...) The synthesis of fact and fiction serves the pastoral life affirmation and has a therapeutic effect. It stabilises the feelings and brings order to chaos. It makes what is complicated simple and creates familiarity with shamefully opaque reality. (...). Horror is excommunicated.” 9) Moved to tears, the viewers believe themselves to be on the morally safe side, while also applauding their own disenfranchisement as a political entity. The idea that political documentary films should have a ‘perfect ending’ is a sedating promise of salvation, because history is a never-ending process, as Dietmar Post says: “It would contradict what scientists, historians, psychologists and philosophers have long declared. That’s why we favour the open form of documentary film. The closed form means that the world has been comprehended. The closed form asserts, but rarely proves something. And the closed form is often ideologically blind.”
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

Ein persönliches Bekenntnis María Martíns: „How unjust life is. Not life.

¿Casualidad? ¡No sabemos!

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-themecolor: text1;">El documental tiene una larga y rica tradición.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-themecolor: text1;">(...)

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-themecolor: text1;"> Juan Zapater escribe:
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-themecolor: text1;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-themecolor: text1;">Y ¿qué es lo que se puede ver en Los Colonos del Caudillo? Muchas cosas.
comunes porque, precisamente en oficio tan tentado por la vanidad, ellos abordan sus proyectos desde la total ausencia de impostura. Ciertamente escogen personas e historias singulares pero cuando las reconstruyen sus retratos derrochan piedad y afecto y evitan la afectación. Llaman a su productora play loud! y esa es la mayor concesión que se permiten hacer al sonido alto. En sus películas, otra pareja de profesionales del texto audiovisual, los Straub-Huillet, repetían sin que demasiada gente de la profesión les hiciera caso, que hay que huir de la sopa sonora, de ese ruido que empasta las imágenes cinematográficas e introduce en ellas la falsa emoción a cambio de distorsionar su verdadero sentido. Poco ruido y mucha verdad en alto hay en Los Colonos del Caudillo;
poca sopa y mucha sustancia. (...)
